No. It's all about insurance. It's better to own a vehicle, but not necessary. If you're a self-employed trucker, independent contractor or owner-operator, you'll definitely earn more. When it comes to smaller cargo vehicles (vans or sprinters), we recommend owning your own vehicle.

To obtain a Class D or CDL Class A-C license, you need to be a US citizen, have a valid legal permanent residency (Green card), or hold a valid employer visa (Employer Card). Starting from the end of 2025, only H-2A, H-2B, E-2, and EB-3 visa programs will be recognized for obtaining or renewing a CDL Class A-C license. So, you don't have to be US citizen. US Citizen, Green Card or Valid Employer Visa.

Key requirements include a USDOT number for vehicles over 10,000 lbs (GVWR), CDL for vehicles over 26,001 lbs, strict load securement, maximum weight limits (80,000 lbs standard), and strict Hours of Service (HOS) logs.
While federal law does not dictate a specific maximum age, most insurers and carriers require trucks to be within 5–10 years old (approx. 2016-2026) for reliability and emissions compliance. $250,000 insurance in coverage for general freight.

Standard driver's license (no CDL) for operation, with typical GVWR under 10,001 lbs. Payloads of 3,000–5,000+ lbs. Auto liability insurance $1M and cargo insurance $100,000. Vehicle must be between 5 and 10 years old.
